Metal Gear Survive Trailer Shows Single Player Footage

Metal Gear Survive Trailer Shows Single Player Footage

After flying under the radar since it was originally announced back in 2016, Metal Gear Survive resurfaced at E3 ealier this year to give fans a taste of what to expect when it launches in 2018. While initially touted as a co-operative experience, Konami has since confirmed that the game will feature what it calls a dense single player campaign filled with loot, resource gathering, and more. Details regarding the mode have been fairly scarce until now, as a new trailer finally shows new gameplay.

The nearly seven minute trailer introduces Metal Gear Survive Game Producer Yuji Korekado, as he provides commentary over what’s happening in the footage. Korekado goes on to confirm that Metal Gear Survive is a spin-off episode of Metal Gear Solid V intended to appear similarly to a sub-missions from Ground Zeroes. The game’s story picks up at the end of Ground Zeroes as Mother Base is attacked by XOF. As the base is falling apart, a wormhole opens up, sucking up soldiers, debris, and corpses. The main character, a Mother Base soldier, manages to escape that fate and eventually joins up with a mysterious organization to investigate the alternative world that the wormhole created.

From a single player gameplay perspective, the player arrives at a wrecked Mother Base armed with simple tools like a bow and arrows. Players need to hunt for food and water as well as find valuable resources that can be used at the Base Camp to craft new gear, items, and objects. Main and side missions are available for players and eventually players will be able to build out and customize their base camp with new upgrades, facilities, and defenses to hold off randomized attacks from the zombie-like wanderers.

The reception to Metal Gear Survive so far has been mixed, no doubt due largely to Konami’s less than amicable treatment of its former developer, Hideo Kojima. While a single player campaign will no doubt appeal to a wider audience, the game will still likely need to overcome the stigma that surrounds it from the Konami/Kojima fallout. Comparisons between this and Kojima’s Death Stranding will likely continue, regardless of how unfair it may be, simply due to the fact that both could potentially launch in 2018.

Metal Gear Survive launches on February 20, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
