New God of War Will Feature Side Quests

New God of War Will Feature Side Quests

Although the new God of War is set to depart from the series’ formula in many ways, developer Sony Santa Monica is still promising a familiar linear experience. In a past interview, the developer confirmed that God of War would not be open world, despite the popularity of the genre in character action games.

However, in a new interview with game director Cory Barlog, it has been confirmed that God of War will feature side quests, although they won’t be called that. According to Barlog, the game will offer opportunities for Kratos to deviate from the critical path and complete some smaller objectives along the way.

News of side quests was very brief and including in a rapid fire interview with Barlog and Game Informer as part of the publication’s latest cover story. During the interview, Barlog offered tons of info about the upcoming game but in piecemeal form. He confirmed that there will be puzzles in the game, teased showdowns with Norse gods, and even promised that the game would explain the transition from Greek mythology to Norse.

Check out the full interview below:

The prospect of side quests in God of War does sound promising and should go a long way towards keeping players invested in the world. Allegedly it will take somewhere between 25-30 hours to complete the game, so it’s very likely that Sony Santa Monica is factoring some side quest distraction into that number.

Since its unveiling back at E3 2015, God of War has been high on PlayStation fans’ list of most anticipated games and all of that waiting is soon to pay off. Sony Santa Monica is not ready to announce a release date for the game just yet, but the studio is sticking to an early 2018 window. Given how much success Sony had with Horizon: Zero Dawn in February it’s possible that God of War could release as early as next month, but that seems unlikely. Either way, God of War has a lot of twists for players to look forward to whenever it does release, including opportunities to spend a little extra time with Kratos and Atreus.

God of War is scheduled to release in early 2018.
