PlayStation Plus Adds Extra PS4 Game for North America

PlayStation Plus Adds Extra PS4 Game for North America

While January’s collection of free PS4 games for PlayStation Plus subscribers has been known for a while, it’s turned out that there’s an extra one that slipped under the radar: Psycho Pass: Mandatory Happiness. There may be a good reason for that, though, as the game is only free on console for subscribers in North America.

Psycho Pass: Mandatory Happiness was released on both the PS4 and PS Vita, but was apparently never available for cross-buy; in other words, buying the game on console wouldn’t unlock a free Vita version, and vice versa. This makes the situation rather interesting, as the game is available for free on Vita in all regions this month, but only North American gamers can also nab it on console.

Considering that Uncanny Valley – another game in this month’s PlayStation Plus lineup – does support cross-buy between systems, it seems like an odd choice on Sony’s part to not simply offer both versions of Psycho Pass: Mandatory Happiness for free as well. The regional exclusivity adds another wrinkle to things since the game can be acquired for free on Vita and is available on console worldwide. So why bother locking off the latter version?

Psycho Pass free for NA PS Plus subscribers

At any rate, the good news is that this month’s lineup is still solid, regardless of region. We reviewed Deus Ex: Mankind Divided quite positively when it released back in 2016, and with season two of Telltale’s Batman series being received well, getting to play through the first season for free is a good way for fans to get up to speed.

As a visual novel title, Psycho Pass: Mandatory Happiness is well-suited to being on a portable system, so it’s nice that that option is at least available to fans worldwide.  Whether this “cross-buy exclusivity” will become a trend for PlayStation Plus going forward remains to be seen, though.

PlayStation Plus’ free games for January 2018 are available for download now.
